There is no greater gift in a relationship – friendship, familial, working, romantic – than to accept someone for exactly who they are, plusses and minuses included. It takes the strength of character to do this, because, in order to accept someone else without feeling threatened by his or her strengths or frightened by his or her weaknesses, one must first accept oneself. Sometimes, the things we find most difficult to accept in others, we haven’t accepted in ourselves. And since we are always developing and changing - it is an ever-evolving journey.
Tilt 365 Weekly Challenge: This week, I will work on accepting who I am – in my entirety – so that I can accept others, in their entirety.
Avoiding being Adoring (Overuse):
When we start to overuse accepting, focusing only on the positives, then we tip the balance towards adoring. We all have our strengths and our weaknesses. To focus only on someone’s strengths does them a disservice because then we are no longer accepting them for the whole of who they are. The relationship moves from an authenticity to pandering.
